[info]caffienekitty has some really interesting thoughts regarding the latest Supernatural episode here. She speculates that 5.09 was Kripke's way of showing that he appreciates the fandom that comes with the series, but that he did it like a little boy might, pulling something creepy and crawley out of his pocket to give to us. Caffienekitty explains that there are three reactions to this, each as justified as each other: there are those who run screaming in horror, those who smile and say "That's nice" but still back away slowly, and the last who are like "OMG Awesome!". All three are natural responses, but we should keep in mind the good intention behind the gift.

Also, she illustrates her points with picspams. You should go looksee :D

Urgh, been dizzy all day today, but the next person who suggests it might be because I'm not drinking enough water, well, they might have something very unpleasant happen to them. I have drunk more water in the last week during this heatwave than I have all year. Maybe thats it. Maybe I have water poisoning >.< Either way, I'll be happier once it passes.

In other news, I can't stop playing Farmville, an application game you can get on Facebook. I have no idea why. It's a blatant rip off of numerous other games that I am completely indifferent to, and yet I can't. Stop. Playing. So random.

Watched all five episodes of Dead Set today. Ah, I love me some zombies. I quite enjoyed it :D Gore factor was high, zombie factor was awesome, and the characters weren't common sense impaired - well, not all of them anyway. Plus a couple of the girls saved the skin of the guys more than once, and I love when that happens. I almost wish it could have gone on for a normal length run of a television series, but I suppose there wasn't too much more story they could have gone with. Audiences can only watch a bunch of people hiding from zombies for so long, I suppose. Still, it was good while it lasted :)

Anyone feel like sending me a good fic rec? I'm in the mood to settle down with a decent story :D
In short, I finished my thesis and am nervously waiting to hear how I did. I know I promised to send copies out to some people, but I really can't bear the thought until I know how I did, sorry!. I've applied to do a PhD at La Trobe and for some postgraduate scholarships, and the results for everything should be out before Christmas. I celebrated with a holiday down the coast with my friend Nick - I went to Geelong, Colac, Lorne, Apollo Bay, Port Campbell and the Twelve Apostles, Melba Gully, the Otways and all that sort of fun stuff.

At the moment I'm at home trying to get some serious cramming in - I'll be sitting the Kanjukuken kanji test and JLPT 1 in December, so despite finishing my thesis I still have to study loads and it's not going that well. :( Getting JLPT done will be a big weight off my shoulders, but until I get my thesis results it feels like everything is up in the air and I can't really make any concrete plans in case I don't get into postgrad. Alas.

Um, fandom is not happening that much, but I just got my invitation to Archive of Our Own and will be migrating my stuff over there, so I hope you will have a look when I'm done; I'll post the link. I'm at the stage of really wanting to write JE fic --most of you probably don't know, but I actually started off in RPF fandom-- but I forgot how hard it is to write RPS; I find it difficult to manage the "canon" since it's so fluid. But I really, really want TOKIO and/or V6 porn, and it simply does not exist.

Oh, yeah, I actually used DK in my thesis! I love my topic. ^o^
15th-Nov-2009 10:56 pm - Quotations are your friend
I just ran across a story that used apostrophes in the place of quotations. I'm still rather sure that in 99% of the cases quotations are required at the beginning of dialogue and at the end of the dialogue. It's not even something that's easy to fix because you can't just replace all the quotations with apostrophes without messing up the apostrophes in the story. grrrr

I'm normally not a grammar nazi but in this case I'll make an exception. It's ugly formatting and not proper writing!

EDIT: it appears that this type of formatting is common in the UK. I didn't know that, but I do still prefer regular quotes so you don't get sentences that look like this.

(random sentence that I modified)

'They do.' She slipped into the galley, moving soundless on little bare feet. 'I'm hungry.'

16th-Nov-2009 02:24 am - Dear Yuletide Santa
(Hi, I have not forgotten all my lovely prompts! I'm trying to go in order and [info]oxoniensis's prompt required thinking on plotty bits that I epically fail at. But it's almost done!

And speaking of, would anyone be willing to beta 5k-ish of Nate/Brad lawyer AU either tomorrow or Wednesday? For being a very non-wordy/prolific writer, my *ahem* comment fics tend to get away from me sometimes, and I am very typo prone so a beta would be great.

Also, omg I am denying myself answering/writing comments until I get at least one prompt done, so that is why I am being so douchey about responses! I promise it is not just natural douchiness/laziness blending through.)

I got my Yuletide assignment, and I think it will be...interesting. This is the first year I'm doing it for whatever reason, and it's a lot crazier than I thought it would be haha.

Patrick Stump was (is?) on Live at Daryl's House today, and they did What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted, which is only one of my favorite songs ever. So of course I had to isolate the mp3 of it, and if anybody else would like a copy, here. Revel in the awesome.

Patrick, you are still awesome. Only for you would I take this break in my flailing over the leak of The Fame Monster (and post twice in one day).

(In unrelated news, I love how I can edit entries on DW and the edits will transfer to LJ.)

Yes I am there, shockingly under amireal. Woo. No uploads because I have been doing other things like dusting. I felt I should get that done before the dust bunnies developed language skills and a sense of culture.

AAAANYHOO. First come first served for my single invite.
15th-Nov-2009 11:28 pm - please get out of my house, bitch
This afternoon I was napping with a bad headcold when I was jerked awake by a fat woman in a white shirt opening my screen door and walking into my damn apartment, because she was apparently too stupid to turn left instead of right, or to realize after standing there for five seconds that SHE WAS IN SOMEONE'S HOME. I said loudly, "Hey!" and half-attempted to lift my head (I was really groggy, this cold is terrible) and she backed out and I heard her talking to Brian in the alleyway, laughing about how she couldn't take ten steps without going the wrong way. Way to apologize to the B&B owner instead of me, you idiot, especially when it was perfectly obvious that you not only marched into my place but also woke me up.

Argh. I like keeping everything open for the fresh air -- my side door is behind the security gate so it isn't like leaving it open to the public street -- but I obviously shouldn't do that anymore. I'm probably lucky that none of the guests have wandered in here drunk at three in the morning.

Usually the B&B doesn't bother me but sometimes it really, really does. I hope my next apartment isn't so invasively close to the tourists.
15th-Nov-2009 11:09 pm - Good weekend
x. Won almost $100 at the casino on Saturday!

x. Got a futon for my office for $75 from Craigs List. It's from the store (Norka) where I wanted to purchase one, but the store is super expensive ($300-$500 for a futon) . Paid for it with my casino winnings. \o/ I call this a win.

x. Finally feeling like myself again. Man, that flu fucked me up for a while. So glad I feel human after all this time.

x. Only two more bio classes! I have a presentation to do for class this week, then my final two weeks from then.

x. Probably heading to Cali in the spring, but I think I really want to hit Florida again before the end of the year to visit my brother's family.

x. Am listening to a random playlist of Tori Amos, which takes me back. Ah, late-teens, early-twenties, how you sucked so much ass, but you got me where I am today, so I suppose I shouldn't wish you away.

I have read the article about the Unitarian Jihad (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2005/04/08/DDG27BCFLG1.DTL)

I ask that you now all refer to me by my Unitarian Jihad name. I am Sister Gatling Gun of Enlightened Compassion. If you do not wish to call me by that name and would prefer to continue calling me by my given name, that is of course perfectly fine. My parents gifted me with a perfectly suitable name which I am fond of. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

"We are Unitarian Jihad! We can strike without warning. Pockets of reasonableness and harmony will appear as if from nowhere!"
1) Dear [info]grav_ity, thank you for making my day. )

2) Dear [info]innerslytherin and [info]severity_softly, thank you SO MUCH for starting [info]cmrossiprentiss.

3) How did I make it to my current ripe old age without knowing that this existed?

4) I have been cooking! If you want a phenomenal (but v. rich) dish for the holidays and like mushrooms, I HIGHLY recommend this recipe. If could probably be made as a more everyday dish by judicious substitution of milk and smart balance, but made as is, it is very decadent and very yummy

5) As You Like it is at the Shakespeare Theater, and The Screwtape Letters are coming. EEEE!

6) Possibly I have jury duty on Tuesday. This could be interesting.

7) Hi! How are you?

8) OMG I FORGOT THAT THERE IS WHO TO BE WATCHED. I AM SO BEHIND ON THE INTERNETS.
Tea with [info] youkosiren! Bookshopping with her and Pru, then the strongest hot chocolate in the world, then more books (also kittens!). I met [info - personal] merelyn and [info - personal] leupagus who are both amazing in the most retarded ways. I can’t even talk about it.

Actual stuff when I get back to Toronto and have slept off the high of hanging out with Pru, who is awesome in ways I can’t explain and who is fattening me up, Fat Princess style so I won’t return to Canada.

Pru: (in the other room) OH GOD, LACTATION, WHY. There is so much other stuff to write! Why, guys? WHY.

Pru: Oh, Jim Kirk. Why are you always doing the alien equivalent of poking holes in the condoms?
MK: He is obsessed with sperm.
Pru: Jim Kirk just wants things.
MK: Someone should write a story where he runs a fertility clinic but can’t get pregnant himself.
Pru: Hold up a second, let’s think about this for a minute.

Why Pru and I should probably not be allowed to hang out in the same room for an extended period of time. Also, we are amazing.

MK: Whenever I see a post on my flist from ncis_finders, I weep.
PRU: i don’t know why you subscribe to that other than that you probably like pain
MK: Well this time I held back from clicking on things
PRU: that’s a start
MK: but when the internet is low on fic for me to read, that’s usually when someone posts something to ncis_finders like “I’m looking for that story where Gibbs ties Tony to the boat in his basement and whips him with a bag of soap bars so it won’t leave a mark. And then he bites giant hickies all over him so people will know who he belongs to. Anyone?????”
PRU: WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT

PRU: OH THANK GOD
15th-Nov-2009 09:10 pm - Update
Yuletide: Seriously narrowing down my list of offers this year (I offered 14 fandoms, most with only select characters) seems to have worked out nicely; I got my assignment last night, and I think it's something I can write. :) Actually, there are a couple of options. We'll see what turns out. As ever, I have high expectations for Yuletide--I'm gonna write a pinch hit, I'm going to write some stocking stuffers, this is going to be the best fic I've done, etc. [info - personal] squonk, are you ready for some write-ins in front of the fireplace at Starbucks?

AO3: I can't tell you how exciting it feels to see people all over my flist getting their accounts set up at the Archive and uploading stories. The idea of building a big, collective, all-ratings/pairings/fandoms-welcome archive was what got me involved with the OTW in the first place, and it remains an idea that really moves me. Being able to keep all of my stories in one place and read a whole bunch of fandoms in one place, in an organized way that lets me make bookmarks and recs (coming eventually!) and the like and interact with other fans, is a dream come true. I miss big archives like Gossamer, the original storehouse for X-Files fic (since 1995!), and I miss having a place where I could archive my RPF along with my FPF (I was among the people more or less kicked off of fanfiction.net when they banned RPF in 2002, which left a lot of us feeling completely lost and cut off from our fandoms). There are so many things I love about this archive, I could go on for days, but let's just say that for me, it feels like my fannish home.

15th-Nov-2009 04:52 pm - MUST WRITE
Argh, half-way through and not nearly half-way through. Mostly because of the betta stuff and taking time for artwork in fandom stuff instead of writing, but MUST WRITE NOW.

I finished Cobwebs finally, so the total right now is:
Ghost!Lex - 3200 (last part that was written Nov 1)
Cobwebs & Hay - 8670

Now I have to decide if I start a brand new story for the next part, or try and go back for Deadman's Switch. I think I'll decide after dinner, which one is hitting me harder. ^^

I've created an account at the Archive of Our Own. Not to upload stories, naturally -- what stories? -- but to read, to bookmark, and to rec. I've been looking at the other bookmarks, too, and I feel like Scrooge McDuck in the money bin. There's already so much good stuff here; I've got tabs open with stories for Merlin, Leverage, and Psych. I've got warnings turned off -- automatically! And automatic access to the age-restricted stuff.

I ♥ my account.

15th-Nov-2009 05:56 pm - instarec: Lure by transtempts
The Vampire Diaries fic rec!

Lure by [info]transtempts, in which Bonnie is a witch and Damon is a vampire who might be helpful but God knows really if he means it. It's a wonderful exploration of a carefully navigated relationship between them; Bonnie is awesome and incredibly insightful, Damon is ambiguous and strangely useful, and it could go anywhere at all. Me, I hope it goes somewhere. Canon-compliant up to most recent TVD episode, and highly recommended for the wonderful capturing of Bonnie and Damon as people who aren't friends but might be one day.

Also, pitch-perfect Elena and Bonnie friendship, which is possibly my favorite relationship on the show. Sure there are vampires, but I seriously, seriously love watching them together.

Also, because [info]transtempts was wondering last night and now I am too--anyone have any good recs for M*A*S*H fic that don't make you want to cut your wrists from subject matter or crimes against language?

Okay, for real? Last week, co-worker all by got down on her knees and begged me because she had no shifts at the store, and she wanted a few hours, since she quit her other job.

This week? She's giving away her only shift. To me.

Not that I'm complaining. I have no shifts next week, partly I think because I have three days at the bookstore, and because it's my birthday on tuesdays, and thus I have no free days except for Sunday.

But, on a happy note, this means that I don't have to wake up early on Sunday and have to rush to get home from our friend's appartment.

(We interupt this post for a breaking news baby update:

Cousin is home from the hospital for the moment. She's only at 4cm, and you need to be at 5cm for them to admit you apparently. So, for the time being, Dylan is staying right where he's at.

This means there's still hope that he'll be bone on my birthday. All she has to do is hold out till Tuesday!!! *crosses fingers*

And now, we reurn you to your original post)

Well, hopefully someone will decide to give up a shift. Maybe co-worker from above. I mean, she did request Black Friday off.

Yeah, you read that right. She works in retail, and worked in a resturant before, and asked for Black Friday off. Can't wait to see if she says anything about me not working. (Opening the bookstore.)

Back to TV. Wathing 'Untold Stories of the ER. Halloween night, this guy came into the ER with a hatchet in his head. The Doctor thought it was a joke at first. I have visions of Jim and Bones, but I don't think I'm that mean. Maybe Jim can be an orderly that is helping Bones. Oh... that might work. *ponders*
43,104/50,000. Yes, I revised my outline again and cut even more. The story just hasn't quite progressed the same. This means that we're much closer to the end. (Eight scenes left with the current outline, to be specific.)

In this chapter: We finally find out what really happened on that mission—and you're all likely to hate me at the end of this ;)

This is set at the beginning of season 5. The fic will be John/Rodney, NC-17, and include a warning for (skip) behavior that is technically sexual harassment (though I hope you'll understand John).

Lady GaGa tickets are mine! They are shitty tickets, but damnit, I got them! I have no idea where this new obsession with Lady GaGa came from, but I'm sure I can find someone to blame it on. But if you've somehow missed it, the Bad Romance video is awesome. )

This means that in December I have tickets to see Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Muse, and Lady GaGa. And if I didn't have to be on a plane four hours after he goes on stage, I'd also have them to the Brian Setzer Orchestra. There is something distinctly odd about my musical taste. Or lack thereof.

(Also, my Yuletide assignment is awesome and I can't wait to start on it.)
15th-Nov-2009 11:13 am - Finally, answers for alitalf
It's been a very hectic week, one way and another, and I realised I hadn't answered [info - personal] alitalf's questions for the meme.

So, just as a reminder.

Rules:

Reply to this meme by yelling 'WORDS!', and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your journal and explain what they mean to you. Keep in mind that if I don't know you that well, your words might end up kind of esoteric/oblique. You'll only get given five words if you do include 'WORDS!' in a reply to this post, meaning you can safely comment (should you wish to do so) without having to play.

Oh NCIS LA, I am not that attached to you (I'm kinda meh towards you). However, if you continue to give me eps like this one, I could be convinced to rapidly change my mind.

See, if you've been around here a while, you'll know that characters get my attention, but character backstory rock my very soul.

This ep rocked my very soul. *is in happy place*

So I saw 2012 last night.

Now, as anyone who knows me knows, I'm one of them nuts who believes in the whole "End of the World" thing happening in 2012. Yes, there's a rational part of me who knows that nothing is likely to happen, but there's no fun in that. ^_^

The rest of my rambling is behind a cut in case someone might care about spoilers. Dunno who, but there are folk out there. )
15th-Nov-2009 09:28 pm - Yuletide
Dear Yuletide writer,

It's 12:30 local time, and I've planted the 158 bulbs I bought in October.
  • 30 spring starflower (ipheion), full sun
  • 20 snowdrops (galanthus), full sun to partial shade
  • 8 English bluebells (hyacinthoides non scripta), full sun to partial shade
  • 30 crocus, half yellow and half purple, full sun to partial shade
  • 40 daffodils, mixed kinds (narcissus), full sun to partial shade
  • 30 wood hyacinth (hyacinthoides misc.), partial sun to shade
I also cleared away some plants that were long since past their prime and mulched the whole thing. To keep away the vorpal squirrels that tear up my garden even when I don't bury tasty treats for them, I lined the bulb trenches with used kitty litter. (Yes, ewwwwww. The clumps of this and that had been sifted out, and I wore gloves. But still, ewwwww. I hope the squirrels feel the same way.) Now I am very, very tired. Luckily I have little to do except fold some laundry.

And take out the kitchen compost.

And take out the trash.

And make soup for my week's lunches.

Vacuuming might be nice.

Did I mention that I'm very tired?
